Durgapur City At A Glance
Literally translated, Durgapur means the abode of the deity Durga. Though a small town some years back, it has now gained a modern identity and is one of the best known industrial towns in the country. A name taken synonymously as steel, the town has the state's largest steel plant which is apparently a token of post-independence Indo-British ties. The town is however more interesting than you can expect an industrial town to be. It has other attractions like the Deer Park and Durgapur Barrage too.
The city was the vision of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the second chief minister of the state. It was then planned and executed by Joseph Allen Stein and Benjamin Polk. It has now come up as a major industrial center with a rich interweaving of industries and contemporary amenities. Durgapur is one place almost anyone dealing in steel has to visit. The place even attracts those who are simply interested in makings and operations of steel. The magnanimity of operations in steel here can amaze anyone.
Induced modernity has bred a new group of youngsters who crave for westernized trends, contemporary cuisine and mood setting entertainment. City Center in Durgapur is one such place. With a set of shopping malls, amusement arcades, fine restaurants and multiplexes, it is a perfect place for a hangout. The Durgapur Club is a more sophisticated and old-styled evening hangout space. Frequented by the elite, the club is mostly a status symbol. The Troika Park is a great place for kids and adults alike. With amusement rides, toy trains and other similar attractions, the place is a popular amusement hangout. A popular shopping area in Durgapur is the Benachity area. It has a typical old-world look in it which makes it a different experience. Selling a wide range of handicrafts and artifacts, the space is particularly flocked by tourists to the town. The area is also famous for having some of the best known Bengali eateries.
Though Durgapur is mostly known for steel it also a green side to it. Blessed well by nature, the town has some pleasant spots. The Deer Park is one such spot. It has a charming lake which supports a lot of animals and makes it a delight for animal lovers. The Kumaramangalam Park is also a lakeside attraction here. Durgapur Barrage is something one should not miss here. An architectural marvel in itself, the spot is stunning during monsoons. Water as it gushes out of the lock gates makes a delightful sight.
The more religious side of Durgapur can be seen in the many temples that dot the entire city. The Rahreswar Shibtla is a stunning temple here. Around 800 years old, the temple resembles the Ratha-style temples of South India. The Garh Jungle here is a major pilgrim site. It was discovered by Jogiraj Brahmananda Giri of the Dasnami cult. The tradition of observing Durga Puja began here and the town earned its name from the same. Shantiniketan, the famous Ashram of Rabindranath Tagore is also located nearby.
